Hobby Tutorial: How to Make a (nearly) Free Photo Studio for Your Painted Miniatures!

I have been working on improving the quality of photos I take of my miniatures for a while and have found a great method used by “the pros” that most any hobbyist can pull off at home for a nearly no cost at all. That method is using a photography light diffusion box and I am going to teach you how to build one using items you probably have around your house (and if you don’t, they are rather inexpensive to procure).

Old School Bloodthirster

 

When I was cleaning up my hobby room this weekend I found a box of my old models from when I first started miniature gaming a little over 20 years ago (oh god, has it really been that long?). Inside said box I found my original Bloodthirster miniature and thought it would be fun  to show how far we have come considering the latest version Bloodthirster kit just released by Games Workshop; I would also like to note that my painting has certainly come a long way too, but 10ish year old me thought this guy was the best thing ever! The new Bloodthirster model is awesome looking and very dynamically posed, but I feel like An’ggrath from Forge World is still the best looking of all of the various Bloodthirsters we have seen throughout the years.

Starting a lot of projects

Continuing on with my goal of doing at least fifteen minutes of hobby work per day I have recently started up several new projects that I have been meaning to get around to. 

Zarakynel, Keeper of Secrets!

I finally got around to finishing off this commission paint piece of the Forge World Keeper of Secrets, Zarakynel. This model was a pain to build (each of those spikes on the leg and the breast are individual pieces too tiny to easily handle by hand and too angled to easily handle with tweezers) but a lot of fun to paint. I am really happy with the finished result.

Many Works in Progress!

With as busy as I have been of late with everything, I have been unable to actually post anything up here. While I haven’t actually finished of any new models since my Children of December Malifaux crew, I do have several projects in the works and I thought I should post some of my works in progress.

Ice Basing Tutorial

 

A little while back I saw a great video tutorial on how to do a really cool ice basing technique. As the Malifaux crew I have been working on is ice themed, I thought technique could end up looking really cool with them. Because the materials used in this technique end up making it a very permanent form of basing I thought I should give it a test run before actually using it on one of my models, so I made a test base that I’m going to end up using as a objective marker for Warhammer 40k. The video I originally saw this technique in doesn’t appear to be available anymore, so I figured I should post a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this technique.

Void Shield Generator!!!

I started a new job last week, so I haven’t been able to get much hobbying or boardgaming in lately. I didn’t want to let this blog drop off the face of the internet again, so I’ll take a moment to brag about what I managed to score last weekend–I was one of only 1000 people (number 691 specifically) to get one of the limited edition Void Shield Generators from GW!!!

New Helbrute!

I just finished off another commission paint job of the brand new Chaos Space Marine Helbrute kit and have to say this is a great kit!

Chaos Space Marines Display

I mentioned a little over a week ago that I was working on a display board for my Chaos Space Marines for a team tournament at a local GW shop. I did end up finishing the display board and models in time, just ran out of time to photograph it all before the tourney.
